Carved wooden mask for Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, Deutsche Bank Lounge, Frieze London, 2023
In 2022, I was commissioned to carve a Zigiren Wöndë, Baga/ Temne, Guinea/ Sierra Leone forehead mask for Yinka Shonibare CBE RA.
This mask, entitled Baga, featured as part of Yinka's ‘African Bird Magic’ exhibition at the Deutsche Bank Lounges at Frieze London in October 2023. Deutsche Bank is the Global Lead Partner for Frieze art fairs, with 2023 marking the 20th year of the partnership.
With only a photograph as a reference, this mask was first modelled in clay before hand carving in laminated sheets of lime wood.
